The fast fashion giant online said the list, which has been eliminated, was charged by an external supplier
The fast fashion retailer Shein has eliminated a photo of what seemed to be Luigi Mangione modeling a short sleeve shirt and launched an investigation.
The list was widely registered on the website of the retailer online yesterday, although it is not clear how long it had passed. The shirt was being used by a model that looked surprisingly as the 27 -year defendant of killing the CEO of Unitedhealthcare, Brian Thompson, last year. As the BBC points out, the shirt was sold for just under $ 10.
In a statement, a Shein spokesman said that the platform had nothing to do with the image, saying that it was «provided by a third -party provider and was immediately eliminated after the discovery.» The spokesman continued: «We are carrying out an exhaustive investigation, strengthening our monitoring processes and we will take appropriate measures against the supplier in line with our policies.»
The alleged third party provider was not identified. Mangione’s lawyers did not immediately respond a request for comments.
It is not clear exactly how the image was generated, either using artificial intelligence or if it was more a photoshop job of the old school. An AI expert told the BBC that the image had a revealing sign of generation or manipulation of AI, such as «the lighting and texture of the image, particularly of the skin, as well as the appearance of an artifact similar to the stain on the correct forearm. The right hand does not seem to show typical segmentation of the finger.»
Shein is far from being the first online retailer to have problems with third -party suppliers who have controversial products or non -compliance policy standards. In 2024, for example, Walmart was forced to eliminate a couple of t -shirts for the infamous white power band Skrewdriver loaded by a third party.
Online retailers have also been forced to deal with the specific merchandise of the mangarian, much of it that serves those who have turned Mangione into a kind of popular hero in the light of their immense dissatisfaction with the United States privatized health system. After his arrest at the end of last year, Mangione Merch, from coffee cups to t -shirts, quickly flooded sites such as Amazon, Ebay and Etsy, with the three retailers moving quickly to tear down the listings.
