Three dead, entire towns underwater and supermarket shelves stripped bare as horror floods wreak havoc on Australia’s east coast

Supermarket shelves are empty since record flood waters and heavy rains claim three lives and cut a large section of an important road.

Floods on the NSW coast in the middle of the north claimed two more victims on Thursday, including a 60 -year -old Dorrigo woman, who was recovered from flood waters in Brooklana.

He was traveling between Sydney and Coffs Harbor when he stopped west of Dorrigo around 7pm on Wednesday and spoke with an officer of the traffic patrol and roads.

The woman, who was driving a Holden 4WD, and the officer then led by hedge to Coffs Harbor before stopping at Wild Cattle Creek Bridge.

They met water on the road and the officer, who was driving a BMW sedan, reviewed the water level, which had a deep ankle.

He advised the woman to turn around, but she ignored her advice and continued towards Coffs Harbor.

The officer gave the woman his phone number and about 30 minutes later he received a call that he was in trouble near Morora Road, Brooklana, about 30 km west of Coffs Harbor.

The officers registered the area, but could not find the woman or her vehicle.

The search was suspended during the night before resuming in the morning and the woman’s car was finally located in the floods in Brooklana on Thursday afternoon.

The responders recovered the body of a woman from the vehicle and, although the body has not yet been formally identified, it is believed to be the 60 -year missing.

In a separate incident, a man in about thirty years was found dead on Thursday in Rosewood, near the city of Wauchope by Port Macquarie-Hostings.

The two tragedies followed death David Knowles, 63, whose body was found in his property in North Moto Road, near Coopernok, north of Taree, Wednesday afternoon.

He was the first victim of a crisis of intense floods north of Newcastle, since four days of strong fish that approached 300 mm left several missing people.

A third man, 49, is still missing in Nymboida, about 40 km south of Grafton.

The record flood waters in Taree have exceeded a 1929 six -meter record, but in the nearby Wingham, the Manning River reached 11.7 meters on Thursday afternoon.

Further north in Kempsey, the Macleay River is now above seven meters, with cabbage and Woolworths closing in the city center, with supermarkets also closed in Macksville and Wingham.

Around 50,000 residents face to be interrupted by floods, while the intense rain arouses new evacuation warnings. The service commissioner, Colin Malone, said the teams were fighting to rescue people in Taree, Glenthorne, Oxley Island and Moto.

«We have seen continuous rains and rivers that flow very fast, which when combined with flooded roads have made access to some isolated people,» he said.

«Our teams have been working during the night to complete flood rescues, but our message to people who still expect to rescue in safe places, far from flood waters in dry places if possible.»

A 36 km stretch of the Pacific highway north of Taree remains closed between Coopernok and Purfleet, preventing semi -trailers from transporting very necessary products to supermarkets.

Port Macquarie is also flooded with the Hastings river ready to reach its maximum point at seven meters upstream in the inner city of Wauchope, which remains cut from the Oxley road.

In the center of the city of Kempsey, the Macleay River has also broken a dike bank and it is expected that it reaches 7.3 meters on Thursday night, which leads to the closure of its Supe supermarkets and Woolworths.

Waterfall Way is also closed between Raleigh and Bellingen, south of Coffs Harbor, while in the nearby Macksville, the Nambucca River has increased above three meters.

Multiple Colles and Woolworths stores throughout the region have been forced to close.

Supermarkets that remain open have had stripped shelves of buyers who fear being cut.

In Laurieton, south of Port Macquarie, where minor floods are produced along the Camden Haven River, the bread shelves were empty in choles.

«We are closely monitoring the situation evolving in NSW, and most of our stores remain open with a lot of food and supplies,» said a spokesman for Daily Mail Australia.

«Our Wingham and Kempsey stores have had to close unfortunately at this stage, and we will open them as soon as it is sure to do it.»

«Our teams are working hard to make sure we have additional food deliveries on their way to our stores, so our communities may be sure that we will continue to serve them whenever it is sure to do it.»

Woolworths has closed its Kempsey supermarket and the big W stores, along with the Woolworths in Macksville after evacuations.

«These will remain closed until new notice,» said a spokesman.

But the Woolworths AT Taree remain open, since the largest supermarket chain in Australia maintains all its open supermarkets between Newcastle and Port Macquarie.

«The deliveries of essential grocery articles continue to travel to most of the communities impacted along the coast,» added the spokesman.

‘However, customers will find a reduced availability of products in our Taree and Gloucester stores due to a series of road closures.

«With a series of communities along the northern coast of the remaining north in the surveillance of flooding, we continue to closely monitor the conditions and council of the authorities to guarantee the safety of our team and customers.»

Port Macquarie’s premises, David Lazarus, said that obtaining a bread bar in his local bakery delight was a challenge since floods prevented the staff from entering work.

«I have noticed today that when we bought bread at the Delight Bakers, they have closed because they can’t get personnel,» Daily Mail Australia told Daily.

‘His staff is isolated where they live. Not only cannot you get a bread bar, but there is no one to serve the bread bar because there are so many businesses that really close their doors.

«It is really affecting many people, all companies in Port Macquarie.»

Lázaro, who runs Port Adventure Cruises with his partner Elsa Barbosa, said he had been forced to cancel nine cruises this week, including an 18th birthday party and a fundraising for Marine Rescue.

«We are quite stressful, with that,» he said.

«We cannot even get to our boat at this time because it is isolated with water between the road and the dock: we are passing most of our time at this time just to see the boat going down the high tides just to make sure that the strings are safe.»

Since they started in 2018, the couple has faced Covid and previous floods in 2021, preventing customers from having a dolphin looking or a cruise at sunset.

«Even if it multiplies tomorrow, and water subsidizes, there is usually a two -day cleaning due to mud,» he said.

«It is a wonderful community, we have already had people who approach us,» we are going to go down. «
