British graduate, 23, hospitalised after being infected with a parasite swimming in waterfall in Fiji during volunteering trip

A British graduate was seriously ill and hospitalized with a parasitic infection after taking a dip in a picturesque Fiji waterfall during a unique volunteer trip in life.

Isabelle Lythgow, 23, had traveled to the remote village of Nairukuruku in Fiji as part of a six -week placement, but his tropical adventure soon became a nightmare when he violently fell a few hours after swimming with premises.

The graduate of the University of Salford, who now works as a mental health nurse, said she began experiencing dizziness, back pain and tingling after attending a bonfire of the village that night.

Isabelle, who suffers from a severe phobia of vomiting, was sick every 30 minutes throughout the night, with the symptoms that lasted more than 12 hours.

When he finally arrived at the hospital by taxi, doctors immediately connected it to an intravenous drip and told him that he should have arrived much earlier.

Later, doctors confirmed that he had probably collected a parasite transmitted by water, a common infection between tourists and volunteers in the area.

Despite the ‘traumatic’ test in August 2023 and fighting for months to recover the weight he lost, Isabelle says he has not stopped traveling to unusual destinations.

Isabelle, from Bury, Greater Manchester, said: ‘I am absolutely terrified of being sick, I have emetophobia. It was my greatest fear before going.

‘I warned everyone that if it happens, it will not be easy for me, it will be traumatic. That night we went to a bonfire and I felt a little remote, but I didn’t think much about that.

‘I went to bed, I woke up in the middle of the night feeling really sick and then, since then, it was every 30 minutes.

‘If he was not lying on his back, it would be longer, but if he were standing, he was at the point, every 30 minutes for about 12 hours.

‘I couldn’t even keep the water down, I had to drink the smallest water.

«It was really bad, we were in the middle of nowhere, so it is quite difficult to take a taxi to the hospital.» I was very dizzy, I would harden my extremities really anthill

‘I ended up taking a taxi and I had to prevent the car from getting sick twice. I arrived at the hospital and saw me immediately and put me in an intravenous.

‘The doctor asked me why I wasn’t coming before, but wanted to enjoy my trip. The doctor said they see it enough with people from other countries and volunteers.

I was panic because it was really traumatic. I avoided water, used a bottle of water and brushed my teeth with bottled water, so I was very careful. ‘

Isabelle said he was discharged after four hours of IV and told him that he only drank bottled water.

The volunteer said that his stomach had shrunk and that he took time to recover the weight and muscle he had lost, while he was «anxious» for the remaining days of his trip.

Despite being hospitalized, Isabelle said he would do it again and advise other travelers who are not afraid to try new experiences.

Isabelle said: ‘My stomach had been reduced and it took me a long time to recover my muscles, I lost a lot of weight.

‘I was really panic and anxious during the next few days, but I overcome it anyway.

‘I am not afraid, I love waterfalls, I don’t think I prevents me from having these experiences.

‘But you really can’t put a price on life experiences and travel. I would never say you don’t do anything for fear of being bad, you can be bad at any time.

‘Life is too short and if you worry about that, you would never experience new things. I would do it again a million times.
