A Lufthansa plane flew without a pilot for 10 minutes after the co -pilot suffered a medical problem while alone in the cabin, according to a report.

The incident occurred on February 17, 2024, while the Airbus A321 plane was traveling from Frankfurt, Germany, to Seville in Spain, according to the translated report of the Civil Aviation Accident Research Commission of Spain (CIAIAC).

The report declared that six crew members and 199 passengers were on board at that time.

According to Associated Press, the co-pilot passed out after the pilot got up to use the bathroom, citing the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA).

According to the report, the co -pilot «suffered a sudden and severe incapacitation» while «only on the flight deck», however, the plane «landed without incident» and the co -pilot was taken to the hospital when landing.

«The plane continued to fly for approximately 10 minutes, in the cruise phase with the automatic pilot activated, but without additional supervision of any of the pilot,» said the translated report.

«The captain decided to land at the closest airport given the emergency situation. This allowed the co -pilot to receive medical attention as quickly as possible,» the report added.

The AP declared that the pilot made an «unplanned landing» in Madrid, and the report lists the Spanish city as the location of the incident.

«The sudden and severe incapacitation of the co -pilot was a symptom of a disease that was not detected by the pilot or during the aeronautical medical examination,» said the translated report.

He also pointed out: «The incident has highlighted the benefit of having another person authorized on the flight cover when one of the two pilots goes for physiological or operational reasons. It has been considered appropriate to issue an operational security recommendation to the (Aviation Security Agency of the European Union) EASA in this regard.»

The report also stated that «moments before» the medical problem «, both pilots had a conversation about the climate situation and the operation of the aircraft, and the captain did not realize anything unusual in the behavior of the co -pilot.»

The results declared that «the automatic and thrust system remained compromised, maintaining the flight route» during the incident.

The report added: «During his incapacitation, the co -pilot was activated inadvertently and acted in the flight controls.»

According to CNN, the pilot tried to open the door «with a regular opening code, which eats the cabin» five times, while a member of the cabin crew also «placed an intercom call to the flight deck.» Sounds consisting of medical findings in the voice recorder were discovered after the «sudden and severe inability of the co -pilot, according to the exit.

According to reports, an air traffic controller also tried to reach the co -pilot up to three times, but did not receive an answer, the exit declared.

The pilot finally managed to get access to the flight deck using an «emergency access code,» said the report.
